5 quick SEL check-ins for the first 5 minutes of class
Need a simple way to help students settle, connect, and get ready to learn—without losing instructional time? These 5 quick check-ins are designed for the first 5 minutes of class and work in any grade level.
1) Weather Report
Students choose a “weather” word for how they feel (sunny, cloudy, stormy, foggy) and optionally share one sentence about why.
2) One-Word Check-In
Everyone shares one word that describes their current state. You can do this out loud, on sticky notes, or in a quick digital poll.
3) Scale of 1–5
Ask: “On a scale of 1–5, how ready do you feel to learn today?” Follow up with: “What would move you up one point?”
4) Breath + Intention
Take 3 slow breaths together. Then students silently set an intention: “Today I will…” (try, ask for help, stay kind, focus).
5) Gratitude Snap
Students name one thing they’re grateful for right now. Keep it fast—one word or one sentence.

Pick just one check-in and run it for a week. Consistency builds safety—and safety builds learning.
