A 3-step reset for classroom escalation (teacher script included)
When a student escalates, your nervous system matters as much as your words. This 3-step reset helps you de-escalate while protecting dignity and keeping the class moving.
Step 1: Regulate (10 seconds)
Lower your voice. Slow your breathing. Relax your shoulders. Your calm is contagious.
Step 2: Name + Offer choice (20 seconds)
Use a neutral observation and two choices. Example script: “I see you’re upset. You can take a 2-minute break at the calm corner, or you can sit with me at the side table. Which one works?”
Step 3: Repair + re-entry (after)
When the student is calm, do a quick repair: “What happened? What do you need next time? How can we make it right?” Then re-enter with a small success step.
If you want, tell me the grade level you teach and I’ll tailor a version of this script to your classroom routines.
